What are Fellow Musicians Saying
About Bill & Bonnie?...

Nanci Griffith:
Writes in her liner notes to the 1993 Grammy-winning album Other Voices, Other Rooms:

"This album is also dedicated to Bill and Bonnie Hearne, who play the best darn folk music I ever heard."

********

"As a young girl in Central Texas, Bill and Bonnie Hearne were the truest form of musical heroes -- Bill as one of the greatest flatpickers ever and Bonnie as a style of vocal and an interpreter of songs of great integrity.

"To think that I would grow up and have the honor of playing music and singing harmony with them as well as having my songs in their repertoire, is one of the greatest joys in this life in music."

Lyle Lovett:
"I first heard about Bill & Bonnie Hearne when I was at school at Texas A&M University. I worked with the student committee that brought in acoustic music, and I used to book the basement coffeehouse where the concerts were held.

"I got a tape from the people who represented Bill & Bonnie Hearne, and I listened to it, and was just knocked out by their music. After hearing that tape, I looked for them wherever I could find them.

When I would go home to Houston, I'd look in the papers and if they were playing, I'd always go to see them. They used to play a place called Corkys in the Montrose area of Houston, and the stage was positioned in the room so you could sit right up next to the stage and I used to sit right in front of Bill and try to figure out all of his guitar licks.

"Just listening to Bill & Bonnie that close was a wonderful experience. The whole story of how Bill & Bonnie met at the institute of the blind is such a romantic story.

"The first time I actually met Bill and Bonnie was several years after I'd first heard their music. It was at the Kerrville Folk Festival. I was standing in the concession stand line and was going to get something to eat and I noticed that Bill and Bonnie had gotten in line behind me. It sort of made me nervous. I thought 'Oh My God, there's Bill & Bonnie Hearne.' After a couple of minutes of standing there I wanted to say something; I wanted to introduce myself to them but I didn't quite have the nerve to - I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around and Bill said 'Pardon me, young fella, you mind readin' the menu for us?'

"So I was really proud."

"Thanks Bill & Bonnie...."

Tish Hinojosa
"My husband, Craig Barker (now an entertainment lawyer) and I, are both graduates of "Bill and Bonnie Hearne's School of Performance and Endurance." Craig was their bass player and I a wide-eyed novice watching their every move in 1979.

"We can all claim to have some tough times. Bill and Bonnie have always given hard roads and honkytonks a face of dignity and grace. "I applaud Warner Western for giving them, and the public, a well-deserved breath of fresh air. Thank you."

Tish

Jerry Jeff Walker:
"Bill and Bonnie are a great credit to all hardworking musicians. Their love of a good song, and the straight-ahead way they play it makes me, as a songwriter, feel really good. If I want to hear a song done the right way, I look to a Bill and Bonnie arrangement. I'm proud to have called them my friends for over 20 years."

********

"Bill and Bonnie have always been two of my favorite artists because they use such great material. In fact, on my 55th birthday down in Belize, I celebrated by having a big fish dinner, some Chilean white wine, a good Cuban cigar, and listening to Bill and Bonnie's Navajo Rug album.

That was a perfect evening. Now I'm ready to hear some new Bill and Bonnie stuff. I know it'll be great."

Michael Martin Murphey:
"Bill and Bonnie Hearne have been on the cutting edge of South Western music since I first met them in the late 60's. They are not only talented but keep their ears to the ground for what's around the corner for good material and musical trends. Above all, they are gracious people capable of entertaining almost any kind of audience. If you want to know what's happening in South Western music, go and see Bill and Bonnie Hearne."

Supporting Cast

Over the years, many people have traveled with Bill and Bonnie, either as pickers, drivers, road managers or pets. Here are the names of some of them, beginning with the current line-up.

THE CURRENT TEAM

Cathy Faber,
Santa Fe, NM

Cathy Faber is a Seattle native, who moved to Santa Fe in April 2001 with her husband Brian.  They left their grown children behind.  Cathy played bluegrass, folk, cowgirl, country material in Seattle in the 80's.  She put together a popular band in Seattle called Ranch Romance and later sang with a Portland group called Ranch Dressing.   That was in 1990.  When that band dried up Cathy didn't play professionally until recently. In the meantime she had started her own whistle business and did craft fairs and such for ten years.  You can check them out at her website www.whimsicalwhistles.com>

A few years ago Cathy decided she wanted to learn to play upright bass, and all kinds of new opportunities opened up after that.  She has played some with Santa Fe’s Buckarettes and with Luke Reed.  Not long after that, Cathy met Bill who asked if she would accompany him when regular bassist Susan Holmes was pursuing other musical interests.  Cathy has been playing regularly with Bill for a few months now and is delighted to have the opportunity.

Susan Hyde Holmes, Santa Fe, NM

In addition to her rock solid bass work, Susan Hyde Holmes lends her engaging presence to the stage when she performs with Bill and Bonnie. A student of renowned Los Angeles session bassist Carol Kaye and a veteran performer, Susan takes her bass work -- and her harmony vocals -- very seriously. Susan also works as a graphic artist for the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe.

Susan has two horses and two dogs that are affectionately known in her house as the "quads." The horses are Jake & Miami, both boys (geldings), and both quarter horses. Susan says that "Miami is the love of my life and puts up with my attempts at team roping. He makes me look like I know what I'm doing!"

The dogs, both Australian Blue Heelers, are Annie, age 13, and Smoky, age 3. These "children" allow humans on the new couch most of the time. Susan says that when they told Annie she was a cow dog, Annie thought they said Couch Dog.

John Egenes, Santa Fe NM

A multi-instrumentalist, John plays mandolin on "Diamonds in the Rough". He also wrote "Muley Brown," the song on "Diamonds..." that is recorded as a duet by Bill and Jerry Jeff Walker. John played a key role in the conceptual stages of the album by encouraging Bill and Bonnie to ask some of their long-time friends to help 'em out the album. John also performs and records with singer/songwriter and longtime friend, Eliza Gilkyson.

John is currently on leave from Bill and Bonnie but still joins them on occasion, as he did in Los Angeles at the Greek Theater and at McCabe's.

Pat Immel, Santa Fe, NM

Patrick Immel has been assisting Bill and Bonnie since 1998.  Pat  is a classically trained trumpet player and a Founding / Charter member of the Scottsdale (AZ) Symphonic Orchestra.  He was the rehearsal coordinator for the trumpet section and principle trumpet player for the Santa Fe Opera and the community production of the opera "Noah's Flood."

Pat was a cast member and played cornet in the CBS production of the mini-series "Buffalo Girls."  He got to hang out with Reba McIntyre.  His msot cherished memory was trying to "spin" a "pun" for Reba, but started off by calling her Rita!  She was most gracious nonetheless and relished his pun.

Pat also played cornet onscreen and helped record the soundtrack for the Japanese production entitled "East Meets West."  One day, while waiting in between shoots, Pat was whistling bird calls while seated near the principle Japanese actors.  After the shoot, one of the Japanese actors, who is considered the "Tom Cruise" of Japan, came over to Pat, smiled, and bonked him on the head with his ceremonial fan.

Pat has now had the honor of doing the horn arrangements and playing trumpet with Bonnie on two of her own songs, "Sweet Mountain Breeze" and "Saturday Night Girl."

Bill and Bonnie's roadie and "drahver," Pat  considers himself a die hard Bill and Bonnie fan.

Odessa, Santa Fe, NM  1999 - present

Odessa is Bonnie's seeing eye dog.  She is a beautiful 55 lb golden retriever and is a true sweetheart and companion for Bonnie on those long drives.

Bill and Bonnie and label-owner Mike Williams were kind enough to give Steve credit as a co-producer on the album.
